The Busy Life of a Raindrop

High above the world, in a fluffy white cloud, lived a tiny raindrop. She never stayed in one place for long—her life was busy, always moving, always changing.

One sunny morning, the great Sun sent down his warm rays. The heat made water from the ocean rise into the sky as water vapour. “Up you go!” called the Sun. The little raindrop lifted, light and invisible. This part of her journey was called evaporation.

High in the cool sky, the vapour began to chill. The little raindrop formed again, joining thousands of others in a cloud. This was condensation, when vapour turns back into liquid. The cloud grew heavy and grey with so many drops squeezed together.

Then came the signal from the wind: “It’s time to fall!” The raindrop tumbled down to Earth as precipitation. Sometimes she fell as rain, other times as snow or hail. Today, she landed with a splash in a river.

The river carried her racing through valleys and fields until she finally rushed back into the ocean. But her journey didn’t stop there. The Sun would soon call her back up again.

Sometimes, her path was different. She might seep into the soil as infiltration, joining groundwater deep beneath the Earth. Plants might pull her up through their roots, sending her out again as vapour through their leaves—this was transpiration. Or she might freeze on a mountain as ice, waiting years before melting and continuing her journey.

Wherever she went, one truth remained: water never disappears. It only changes its form and place, moving in a great circle called the water cycle.

The water cycle was endless, and she loved every moment of it. “Busy, busy, busy,” she laughed. “But oh, what a wonderful life for a raindrop!”

Science Note:

The water cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection, infiltration, and transpiration. It moves water between oceans, air, land, and living things. This cycle makes rainfall, fills rivers, and keeps life on Earth alive.
