Frenemies

Long ago, in a sparkling glass kingdom, two visitors arrived to share the same home.

The first was Water—steady, clear, and calm, who loved to sink deep and settle. The second was Oil—golden, glossy, and full of charm, who floated proudly on top.

“Come down here,” called Water, stretching out her arms. “We could blend and make something wonderful together!”

But Oil twirled and laughed, spinning at the surface. “I cannot! I’m too light, too free. Your world is heavy, and I was born to rise.”

So began their endless quarrel.

Whenever the kingdom was shaken by curious hands, Oil and Water whirled together in a furious storm. Golden droplets scattered through Water like stars in a night sky. For a moment, it seemed as though they might finally unite. But as the jar grew still, the truth always returned: Oil drifted upward, forming a bright golden crown, while Water sank below, carrying the weight of her dense body.

“You don’t want to be with me!” cried Water.

“You don’t understand,” sighed Oil. “It isn’t choice—it’s destiny. You are heavier, your molecules cling tightly together. I am lighter, my molecules slip apart. We are different worlds trapped in one jar.”

Still, neither could escape the other. They lived side by side—close but divided, forever touching yet never mixing.

The people who watched called them frenemies: companions bound together, but never true friends. And so Oil shimmered above, Water glistened below, and together they told the world a lesson—that not everything is meant to blend, no matter how much you stir.

Science Note:

Oil and water don’t mix because they are made differently. Water is denser (about 1 g/cm³) and polar, which means its molecules stick to each other. Oil is less dense (about 0.9 g/cm³) and non-polar, so it floats and refuses to mix. That’s why, no matter how hard you shake them, they always separate again.
